Nice article. Bounce rate is very harmful to the website, it adversely affects website’s SERP. Some great points you mentioned for lowering website bounce rate. But one reason I think you forget to mention for high bounce rate that is a complex registration process. Most of the users leave immediately such website that has long registration forms and leads to high bounce rate. Social login can help users to login by making the process quick and simple and ultimately lower the bounce rate.

Thanks Doug, you’re welcome. So many additional good points raised here in the comment as well.

It’s definitely a long-term pursuit to build an audience and engage with users – and costs money if you want to shorten the incubation time.

Thanks for the reminder though, I really should check out some additional commenting plugins which help reduce barriers to entry and allow users from other platforms to weigh in a little more easily.

It takes quite a bit to instigate comments nowadays (outside of face book comment streams). I hate typing out replies unless I feel the need to contribute something a bit more permanent than a facebook blurb to the web, and I am such a poor writer that I never sound clever enough to do justice to the post.

The kind of self-serving nature of commentors in the context of wordpress blogs means that comments are isolated to that particular blog and further limited by people interested enough in reading the post comments.

Hence facebook has become the soapbox commenters new haven. Nothing in it just be cognizant to the beast modis opeandi. Lots of sites now favor the “login with facebook” functionality for theor commenter retention strategies.

That said, if relevant and placed in the chronological order, comments can create independent traffic streams. So, allowing links, and chronological placement of comments is quite important too. Akismet seems to be quite good with blocking comment spam but the random comment still get through and you have to manage that carefully not to annoy real commenters. I am too cheap to pay for the paid Akismet service.

Carefully steering topics on other posts where commenters are having a big fat rant about is also quite fun. Soliciting comments from other streams without being too obvious about it is quite an art but seen it used every day.

Sharing your post with your friends on Facebook works (this comment case in point). Works exponentially better if you do it in a group or on a page with a big following. Even ask your friends to help incubate more popular Facebook groups with interest focuses.
